Dorkbot Vancouver Round-up: November 7th

Last week I had lunch with Alex Beim and Clive Goodinson, who started the Vancouver Chapter of DorkBot. We decided to join forces and try to get regular meetings going in town for people who are doing interesting things with computers.

We're going to hold the first official meeting of DorkBot Vancouver on November 7th, in the back room of the Irish Heather. the goal of this first meeting is just to flush people out from behind their computers, and give us all a chance to meet each other over a drink.

So, if you are in Vancouver, and you are interested in the fusing of technology with art and music, please come out and join us.

If you can't make it out on the 7th, but you still want to be notified about upcoming DorkBot events, join the mailing list.

I'd like to use this thread as a kind of RSVP list, so if you're planning on attending, please add a comment and introduce yourself, so that we can get an idea of numbers. Note that you don't have to be a 'computer nerd' to join us – anyone is welcome.

    Sounds like a good plan
Just thought I'd drop by and mention that we pretty much started Dorkbotpdx the same way and it's been working out well. We've had about 4 "informal" meetings where whoever wants to shows up and we talk about whatever over a couple beers. We also have slowly been moving towards finding a space for regular events and talking about other activities we'd like to have the group focus on. It's been great and seems to match the Northwest temperment better than a more formal, established approach of setting up an event and then announcing it to the world and just hoping the right people show up. Good luck and hopefully one of these days a few of us can road trip up there to meet our dorkbot neighbors in Canada (planning on doing a dorkbot roadtrip to Seattle at some point already).

    Intro
Hi, I've read about Dorkbot… sounds great ! Glad to see someone has started something in Van. My name is David Ayre, my project partner (Andrew Klobucar) and I started a conceptual organization called Global Telelanguage Resources dedicated to exploring issues of writing and technology (http://www.gtrlabs.org). I'm primarily a coder with a strong interest in computational linguistics. I've got some Java projects i'm in the process of rolling out under GPL for textual analysis, transformation and generation, one app is kinda like a photoshop for words, filters applied to text to transform it in creative ways. Also just started working with the folks at Bryght (www.bryght.com) who are a great creative bunch, and am doing quite a bit of PHP work with Drupal. Would be intersted in getting to know some of the more computationally related computer types and what people are up to… been kinda isolated the last year so would be good to meet people and share ideas/collaborate. See you on the 7th !

    DorkBot RollCall
Hi David! Sounds like a really fascinating project. I'm looking forward to chatting with you on the 7th and finding out more about it. I have some friends that are writers who would probably find your work particularly intruiging… maybe some of them will join us. -Jer

Hey! Looking forward to the 7th although I probably won't get there until 830 or 9. I think it's great to see a dorkbot starting up in town. I'm an artist (www.katearmstrong.com) and I run the Upgrade (http://www.katearmstrong.com/upgrade/vancouver/), which is another fun gathering for those into art and technology and everything in between. I look forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new folks so ciao until then…

    Dorkbot
Hi, I just found out about Dorkbot and I'd really like to check it out. I guess a little bit about me: I went to VFS for 3d animation and have been working at EA Mocap for the last two and a half years. At work I deal with a lot of animation, some rigging elements, scripting and recently database work.  I DJ, take photos, and try to check out as much of the art scene as I have time for. I'll see you guys on the 7th!

Hi Kate and Kirk! So far it looks like we’ll have at least a dozen people on Tuesday, plus whoever shows up unannounced. Keep spreading the word…

hi jer! i will be there, as will (hopefully) joel and my collaborator aaron. i will regale you with exciting tales of how we are attempting to bring information visualization principles and better communication to the very nerdy field of genomics and systems biology.

    We’ll be there
My wife, Karen, and I will be there…we're both graduate students at SFU SIAT, and are always interested in what other people in the digital ats community up here are doing. Karen is a computational linguist currently studying HCI and various other geeky things…I'm an occasional computer musician, who is studying interactive fiction design. We both make movies for fun, and are generally excited to find other people who share our passion for geeky and arty things. Looking forward to it…

    Congrats and good luck!
Good luck on Dorkbot Vancouver! The first Dorkbot DC meeting was pretty informal at a Starbucks. We had some presentations lined up for the second one at a restaurant, then by the third one we found a great venue!

    Looks like we’ll have agreat

Looks like we'll have a great turnout.  I think the location was an excellent choice.  It's large enough and the food there is much better than your averige pub fair.
