TypeFlakes

I've spent much of the last week building snowflakes.

Snowflakes themselves are fascinating. Formed as water droplets freeze and crystalize in the atmosphere, they are models of symmetry and beauty. Through the simple process of cystalization, they build wonderfully complex forms.

My friends over at Industrial Brand Creative (check out their excellent blog, if you haven't done so already) asked me to create a snowflake generator for a printed holiday card campaign for one of their clients. Working in Processing v.0123, I built an engine that creates unique flakes out of type elements. You can see a bigger flake in detail here.

This was a fun project based on a very clever design idea. Perfect work to get ready for the holidays.

    Verrry Cooool!

I really like these. Are you sharing code? I'm a processing newbie, been creating some weather-generated art that scrapes weather data and generates shapes, colors, and movement. I'd love to do something with the snowflakes. My newbie stuff is here: http://www.alphapure.net/wxcontest/weather_art.htm

    Thanks, Dwight!

I’ll be posting the source for this soon.

I like the work that you ave been doing – there is definitely something interesting about applying live real-world data like weather data in a visual medium. I’ll be keeping an eye on your work!
